YouTube Ads May Appear in Bruin Learn (Canvas) Starting September 2025

What’s Changing

Instructure (Canvas), is changing the way that it works with YouTube. Beginning September 22nd, 2025 any existing or new YouTube videos added to Canvas may start displaying ads. These ads are controlled by YouTube and cannot be turned off in Bruin Learn.

Recommended Solution: Use Kaltura to Embed YouTube videos

Kaltura provides an option where instructors can copy the link to a public YouTube video and add it to Kaltura. Once the YouTube video appears in Kaltura and is embedded in a Bruin Learn site, the ads will be removed. This is a common way to remove ads from YouTube content in Bruin Learn.

Please note: Kaltura will continue to make every effort to filter YouTube ads for videos ingested into Kaltura; however, ad delivery is ultimately controlled by YouTube and some ads may still appear.

Add YouTube videos to Kaltura to reduce ads from displaying in Bruin Learn

If you continue embedding YouTube videos or links directly in your course (which may display ads), please add a brief disclaimer near the embedded video or link to note that the ads are not affiliated with UCLA:

“This video may include YouTube ads that are not affiliated with UCLA.”
