The Data Governance and Stewardship initiative promotes responsible data management and stewardship across UCLA. We establish policies, standards, and best practices that ensure data quality, consistency, and compliance. By fostering collaboration and accountability, we help the university use data ethically and effectively to advance its mission of teaching, research, and public service.
Aligning with UCLA Strategic Goal 5
UCLA’s organization and processes have evolved over the course of more than a century. While much of our remarkably complex institution operates smoothly, inefficiencies have also developed. To ensure we can support brilliant research, excellent teaching and exciting new initiatives with our limited resources, the university must improve its systems and processes, free up resources, adjust incentive structures and modernize its technology which will allow UCLA to meet its full potential. To achieve this goal, we have established the following commitments:
- Establish foundations for effective use of data
- Ensure institutional data is reliable, robust, and secure
- Leverage tools to advance the mission of the university
Data Governance
Establish a collaborative, campus-wide Data & Analytics Governance approach that strengthens the foundations for effective use of data at UCLA. By bringing together data stewards and subject-matter experts, governance ensures institutional data is reliable, robust, and secure, aligns data programs with university priorities, and leverages modern tools and processes to advance UCLA’s mission in research, teaching, and public service.
Data Stewardship
An effective data stewardship program ensures effective management of data to realize potential benefits, prevent misuse of data, and ensure aggregation and analysis of high-quality data. It should adhere the following values:
Dependable
Ensure institutional data are reliable, consistent and of high quality
Compliance
Ensure that institutional management practices comply with security and privacy policies
Literacy
Ensure shared definition of institutional data and key metrics
Accessibility
Ensure institutional data are accessible for appropriate purposes, people and systems.
Interdisciplinary
Ensure we implement cross functional sharing and decisions to avoid redundancy and ensure single source of data.
Data Domains
Ensure comprehensive list of official data sources for campus use.
Data Stewards
Data stewards will be appointed for all university data. They will be collaborative, accountable, trustworthy and analytical and will be responsible for the following:
Operational Oversight
Oversee the lifecycle of a particular set of institutional data
Data Quality
Establish data-quality metrics and requirements by defining parameters for data.
Policies and Procedures
Define access policies for data, including approval and provisioning processes.
Risk Management
Oversee privacy and security policies.
