Revolutionizing UCLA Classrooms with AI: Introducing the AV/IT Smart Repository Concept

UCLA’s Digital & Technology Solutions (DTS) team is exploring a powerful new approach to AV/IT system development through the early-stage concept of a Smart Repository. This vision integrates artificial intelligence to enhance development, architecture, and system reliability across all General Assignment Classrooms (GACs).

A Complex Challenge in Modern Learning Spaces

UCLA operates 190 GACs, each outfitted with sophisticated audiovisual and IT systems. Historically, configuring and managing these systems has required repetitive manual programming and complex integration with communication, collaboration, and monitoring tools. These processes not only demand significant time and expertise but also create inconsistencies and hinder agility and innovation across campus spaces.

Introducing the Smart Repository Vision

To address these challenges, the AV/IT Solutions team is piloting AI-driven workflows with OpenAI’s top-tier APIs. This work lays the foundation for a Smart Repository, a centralized and intelligent development framework concept that would support faster, more accurate AV/IT lifecycle management.

While still in its conceptual phase, the Smart Repository is envisioned as a knowledge-sharing environment where AI assists in workloads across platforms. The vision includes automated development processes, consistent architectural patterns, and real-time adaptability to ensure AV/IT systems are reliable, scalable, and easy to support.
