Overview

Hypothesis is a digital annotation LTI tool integrated in Bruin Learn. Instructors can use Hypothesis to create assignments for students to submit annotations on PDF documents, JSTOR articles, VitalSource texts, and YouTube videos. Hypothesis enables students to highlight and leave reflective comments on their reading assignments.

Primary Benefits

For Instructors and TAs

  • Enables instructors to develop annotation assignments on course reading material.
  • Instructors can create group Hypothesis assignments, based on Canvas (Bruin Learn) Course Groups, where the group collectively annotates and highlights PDF or website course material.
  • Hypothesis supports Canvas (Bruin Learn) Course Sections. Students can annotate and leave comments on assigned content. Instructors, TAs, and Admins will have access to all Sections and students will only have access to the Section(s) they belong to.
  • Instructors can grade Hypothesis reading assignments in the Canvas (Bruin Learn) Speedgrader.
  • Instructors can also use the Hypothesis Auto Grade feature to automatically score student submissions based on the number of annotations.

For Students

  • Students are able to highlight, annotate, and leave reflective comments on course PDF readings and websites.
  • If Hypothesis is used as a group assignment, student groups can annotate on course readings together and benefit from reading the collective comments from their peers.
  • Students can save separate annotations just for themselves as study notes.

Pricing

Hypothesis is paid for by the University. It is available to instructors and students at no cost.
