Overview

Turnitin Clarity will be available in Bruin Learn as part of a two-term exploration of writing process tools from Winter 2026 through Spring 2026 and is designed to help instructors gain insight into the student writing process. This tool gives students a composition space where they can interact with an optional AI assistant within the context of the assignment. Instructors can gain key insights into the writing process such as when text is pasted, the total writing time, and a draft history playback. Instructors can also access integrity insights, establish AI policies for an assignment, and provide tailored feedback to students.

If you are interested in participating in this tool exploration, please submit the Bruin Learn Interest Survey - Writing Process Tools.

Turnitin Clarity

This course is part of a small pilot group testing Turnitin Clarity, a new tool designed to support your growth as a writer. Throughout the quarter, you will be invited to use Turnitin Clarity to explore innovative writing technologies and shape how they’re used at UCLA.  You will have the opportunities to share the experiences and feedback at the end of the quarter, which will be valuable for tool improvements and campus implementation at the next stage.

What does Turnitin Clarity do?

Turnitin Clarity is a tool that provides an online writing space where you can draft, revise, and submit your assignments. As you write, it records elements of your writing process—such as revision history, typed vs. pasted text, and active writing time. This information helps us better understand how writing develops over time and how we can support you.

What doesn’t Turnitin Clarity do?

Turnitin Clarity does not automatically grade your writing.. It does not monitor anything you do outside of the Clarity writing space, or detect the presence of AI writing. Instructors may review Clarity insights to better understand how your work was developed, but Clarity itself does not determine originality—its only purpose is to give instructors insight into how your writing develops.

Why are we piloting this tool?

We’re piloting this tool to help you develop strong and sustainable writing habits, while also giving instructors more insight into your writing process so we can offer better, more targeted feedback. This pilot also gives you the chance to try out a new technology and let us know what works, what doesn’t, and how it can be improved for future students.

If you have concerns about using Turnitin Clarity or wish to opt-out of being part of this pilot, please email me directly.
