Device Registration Overview

As part of Network Unification, UCLA is adopting a zero-trust security model with expanded network access control (NAC), granting network access based on authenticated users, devices, and assigned roles. To support this shift, devices connecting to the new campus wired and wireless networks must be registered with UCLA’s network management and security systems. Registration ensures devices receive the appropriate role-based access while supporting stronger campus network security, access control, and visibility.

To support device registration, UCLA has developed the Device Registration Portal (DRP), a web-based application that will enable efficient registration, onboarding, and ongoing management of devices connecting to the new campus wired and wireless networks.

Device Registration FAQs

  • Wired Network Access: All devices that need access to the wired network must be registered.
  • Wireless Network Access: Non-802.1X capable devices that cannot use standard username and password Wi-Fi authentication must be registered. Examples include AV/IT systems, laboratory equipment, printer, gaming consoles, smart TVs and streaming devices, other Internet of Things (IoT) and headless devices

Laptops, tablets, and smartphones do not need to be registered. These devices can connect to the wireless network using eduroam or UCLA_GUEST.

The Device Registration Portal (DRP) is a web-based application that will enable efficient registration, onboarding, and ongoing management of devices connecting to the new campus wired and wireless networks.

Campus stakeholders will use the DRP to register new devices and manage existing registered devices after they transition to the new network.

The DRP is being developed in two phases, with subsequent enhancements following standard operating procedures. 

For Phase 1, the DRP will include:

  • Role-based workflows for Super Admins, Group Admins, Group Users, and Basic Users
  • Ability to register devices, manage devices, review and approve device requests, and view audit logs
  • Basic notifications
  • Key integrations with SSO, Grouper, Clearpass, and Infoblox
  • Super Admin: Manages configurations, mappings, policies, audit logs, quarantine actions, and platform governance.
  • Group Admin: Reviews, approves, or rejects device registration requests for assigned group(s); manages devices within the group scope; provides administrative oversight. 
  • Group User: Registers and manages group devices, including requests that may require approval
  • Basic User: Default role for faculty, staff, and students. Registers, manages (edit/delete), and renews their own eligible personal or individual devices through the portal.

Campus stakeholders will undergo role mapping and role provisioning exercises as part of their wave’s pre-migration activities.

The DRP will include several releases, with a final release in early 2027. Phase 1went live on July 21, 2026 for Super Admins and TR Pilot stakeholders.
